Who/What is WildFire.bg?

Short Description:

Our goal is to develop and maintain an app and website that will attract many hundreds if not thousands of able bodied volunteers from across Bulgaria to help with the low skill, yet labor intensive work of smothering out small fires, and digging small fire breaks, as an extension of the team of professionals that work to bring the more dangerous parts of the fire under control.

Disclaimer:

This site is for informational purposes only. Each user has their own personal responsibility as to what they do with this information. We are currently operating on a limited test basis and will aim to provide as much relevant info as possible for as many wild fires as possible for this our first fire season of 2022. All info on this site should not be considered official in any way, and any person who chooses to use this info shall do so at their own risk and expense.

Full Description:

It is our mission to one day, as soon as possible, effectively coordinate with local, regional and national authorities to source info on Bulgarian wild fires as to enable any willing and physically able volunteer, regardless of experience, to travel to a fire and help local and national authorities in a meaningful way. This help will primarily involve direct contact with less dangerous parts of a fire to help extinguish it or help to keep it from reigniting or spreading.

For many potential volunteers, there needs to be a moment in time where it all makes sense to even visualize the possibility of dropping everything and rush out the door to a fire, or even to plan ahead a week or 2 in advance! We believe via our site and app(under development), and through public engagement in the off season, we will attract many more spontaneous and premeditated volunteers, perhaps even into the thousands!

WildFire.bg will work to remove or lessen, real or perceived obstacles anyone might consider before committing to join a local team and fight a fire. To accomplish this, WildFire.bg is developing this site and will also eventually create an app to provide easy to read, accessible information, and content regarding:

-Where fires are located

-Meeting points for volunteers

-Safety concerns

-Information for self training and organized training regarding volunteer safety and work techniques required at a wild fire

-Transport options
-Accommodation options

-Help to understand possible personal expenses

-What gear/food/water is needed

-Information on how volunteers can make a difference

We encourage each potential volunteer to consider taking just one day of their time to commit to working at a fire either on the mountain, or at the meeting point helping with logistics or local transport. (as the way down the mountain often ends many kilometers away from the original meeting point) We are also actively asking any one with an off road capable 4x4 to also consider this work as these people are invaluable as they can carry 3 or 4 more volunteers up to the fire saving hours of hiking.

We believe that the process of helping out in wildfires will be a gateway for many people showing up to donate time and money for all manner of needs and emergencies, or even just to maintain and beautify Bulgaria! We also hope many new wildfire volunteers will go on to become professionally trained all hazard volunteers at NAVRB.bg!

To gain access to the fire event info simply sign up for an account forever free of charge. As this type of volunteer work can be dangerous, we kindly ask you to answer our sign-up questionnaire and then wait a short time for our manual approval process. We are still working on the precise requirements for this work, but generally you need to be a legal adult, preferably above the age of 25, and in above average physical condition in order to hike hours to the site, work a full day, and hike down in what could be hours back to the meeting point. You will also need to bring all of your own food and water as well as your own motika, or shovel. You should also not wear any polyester/synthetic pants, or shirt, and you need to wear work/combat boots in good condition as normal shoes will melt in the hot smoldering dirt.
