Use dirt to snuff out smoldering tree stumps and other left over burning debris to keep from reigniting.

Not only to support your feet and ankles for the long march up and back down the mountain, but also to protect from the still very hot burnt ground that will melt through normal shoes. You will also need to consider the smoke. Most volunteers simply use a bandana or an N95 mask, but you can also use greater protection should you chose.

Keep a look out for falling trees, wind bursts, or small fires creeping up behind you as embers can float through the air and land on the other side of you. You never have to wait for someone else to tell you its time to pull back to safety. On the other hand if someone does tell you to pull back, do not delay one second. Sadly, despite all precautions, and great team work, we will still lose some brave volunteers to wild fires, as was the tragic case last year.

The fire slowly crept up to this old tree. No chance to stop it, so we retreat to safety and wait for the small fire truck to help us out.
